The content of the Twilight Sessions

First session (Spring):
  • Learning all about seeds and sowing.
  • Experiments to show the needs of plants.
  • Preparing beds using “lasagne gardening” mulching techniques.
  • Square foot gardening: why plants need maths
Second session (Summer):
  • Growing wild flowers for pollinators, how school grounds can be an oasis for wildlife. Habitats.
  • Looking after plants, watering, weeding: what’s a weed? Water cycle, Plant life-cycle.
  • Insects: friend or foe? Identification
Third session (Autumn):
  • Harvesting, cooking, eating: Establishing healthy eating habits.
  • School grown produce: enterprise projects and harvest festival
  • sowing/planting for winter, putting beds to bed, seed saving.

Growing Devon Schools Twilight Sessions

New for 2019 the Growing Devon Schools Partnership are offering a block of 3 free practical training sessions for teachers, TA’s and school garden volunteers. The aim of these sessions is to support school staff and volunteers to gain the confidence and skills to use the school grounds more productively, for:

  • food growing, harvesting, cooking, composting.
  • wildlife gardening
  • integrating outdoor learning into the school year
  • making curriculum links, furthering healthy development, catering for all abilities and learning styles.
The free sessions will take place on the following dates and locations:
